  • Batik Mug for Soup or Latte | handmade pottery by Gravesco Indianapolis
    Quick shop
    Sold out
    Sold out

The new Batik Mug is perfect for your favorite soup or latte. I've even enjoyed using it for my morning bowl of age inappropriate cereal. You'd think at age 45 I'd be over Lucky Charms, but alas, it's just not true. I love 'em.

The Batik Soup Mug is microwave and dishwasher safe, though I personally prefer to hand wash my favorite pottery rather than allow it to rattle around in the dishwasher. That's just my personal preference, though, and you're welcome to clean your new latte mug however you'd like! If you do choose to put it in the dishwasher, go with the top shelf and make sure it isn't going to rattle against another item that could potentially cause a chip.

The wide handle is stamped with an antique batik stamp for texture which makes it easier to grip. The width of the handle makes it easy to hold even when completely full to the rim.

Each mug is wheel thrown then the stamped handle is added. Because of the handmade nature of the mug, each one is a little different. That's the beauty of handmade!

    The story of the stamp...

Twenty or more years ago, I was making jewelry and had the pleasure of attending several gem and lapidary wholesale shows. The shows in Detroit were in a hotel with all the meeting rooms and 4-5 floors of suites filled with vendors from all over the world. Essentially, the show turned a hotel into a huge market with vendor stalls. The scents of food being cooked in several rooms, tables piled withe gemstones and pearls, and a few rooms of miscellaneous items from all over Asia were a treat every time.

In one of those vendor rooms I found antique wooden batik stamps and fell in love. At that time, I had absolutely no idea what I would do with them but I understood they were rare, handmade and the textures were so compelling I couldn’t pass them up. I purchased two, of which this is by far my favorite.

Fast forward to 2017 and I rediscovered the stamp unpacking one of my last boxes from moving into the house. The gorgeous antique batik block is finding its home in the studio making impressions in clay.

**If the mug is in stock it will ship immediately. If it is not, I will make one just for you and it will ship in 3-4 weeks.**

  • Irish Coffee Mug with Batik Handle | Handmade by Gravesco | Rebecca Graves Pottery
    Quick shop

With the arctic temperatures we have in Indiana a splash of something extra in the coffee definitely helps keep us warm. I'm not saying that's the only thing you can use these mugs for, though! I use them every day because they're comfortable to hold and nestle nicely in my hand as I'm sure they will in yours.

    Holds approximately 12 ounces.

The textured handle is stamped with an antique wooden batik stamp before it is attached to the mug and fired. I found the antique stamp nearly twenty years ago at a gem and lapidary show. I had no idea what the stamp would be used for but knew without a doubt it would be used at some point. Flash forward to now and it's become one of my favorite texture tools in the studio.

The creamy glaze is called Canvas, in keeping with my background as a painter. With a blank canvas, the only limits are your own imagination.

    Microwave and dishwasher safe.

  • Viking Cups | Historical Design + Modern Glaze
    Quick shop

When I was asked to participate in the Whitestone Viking Fest I immediately went on a binge researching traditional Viking pottery. This mug was one of my absolute favorite historical shapes found in Viking Village ruins.

One of the most fascinating things to me about pottery is what it can tell us about past civilizations. Pottery reaches through the ages. Cracked shards found at archeaological sites can be pieced together to tell us about the types of craftsmanship, how food was stored, how people dined.

This Viking drinking beaker design is inspired by a vessel found in Sweden from the the Viking era. I’ve put my own modern elements into it as an up to date interpretation such as food safe glaze and using an electric kiln rather than pit firing.

The Viking Beaker holds approximately 22 ounces of your favorite beverage!

  • Carriage House Everyday Mug | Slate Glaze | Modern Grey
    Quick shop

The mug you reach for every morning, our Carriage House Everyday Mug is just the right size and comfy to hold.

When designing each piece of pottery, I pay attention to the details that make it truly function in a way that you can't imagine living without it. The Carriage House Everyday Mug holds approximately 12 ounces of your favorite beverage. The dimple in the side of the mug, beneath the handle, gives your knuckles a little extra room when your coffee or tea is piping hot. If you prefer to snuggle your mug with your hand wrapped around it, the dimple is a cozy spot for a steady grip. The handles are my unique pinched design formed by my own fingers so they'll fit yours comfortably and ergonomically.

Microwave and dishwasher safe, though, I do recommend hand washing since things bang around quite a bit in the dishwasher. If you choose to use the dishwasher anyway, your pottery will last much longer if you're careful to place it where it won't vibrate or bang against other dishes.

Each piece of pottery is carefully wrapped and packed to ensure safe delivery.

  • Lake Ripple Handmade Coffee Mug by Rebecca Graves | Gravesco
    Quick shop

Spending time on the water in my kayak, I'm always fascinated by the ripples in the water, growing outward from everything that touches the surface.

When throwing these mugs on my pottery wheel I'm thinking about how those ripples add to the relaxing effect of being on the water and I wanted to bring them to the table. Each Lake Ripple mug is wheel thrown and adding the deep ripples is the last step before removing the pot from my wheel. Once the ripple pot is on the drying board, I impress my thumb in the side to dent it.

Several hours after making the cup, the bottom is neatly trimmed and my signature dimpled handle is added. Once the handle is in place it is shaped to fit the hand comfortably and a thumb impression is made at the top to add even more coziness to your experience and the indentation made earlier with my thumb in the side of the cup allows your knuckles to nestle without burning. If you like to hold your mug around the body to keep your hands warm, that thumb dent makes it easy to grip.

Textures and details are what drives me to create. I love creating the little nuances that make your morning coffee or tea more enjoyable.

The Lake Ripple mug holds approximately 12 ounces of your favorite hot or cold beverage and is both microwave and dishwasher safe.

Handmade in Indiana by potter Rebecca Graves Prowse.
