Gratitude, cleansing, meditating, space clearing and blessings are just a few of the ways that ethically sourced palo santo can improve your spiritual practice and well being. It’s not incense to be lit because you want a room to smell good, it’s so much more. It is sacred, must be ethical and used with clear intent.

With a long history as a holy wood whose smoke is healing it is no surprise that during the stay at home lockdowns during the pandemic many people are turning to palo santo to relieve stress and create a stronger connection with ritual. It is my desire to offer a Palo Santo ritual kit that encourages you to celebrate the sacred nature of this sacred smoke and offers an option for using sacred herbs as something more than just air freshener.

For decades, palo santo has been my first choice when I bring something new into my home that I want to smudge, when I want to meditate on gratitude or when it is time to do a simple smudge to clear my home. I even use it as an intentional shift from the busy work of running a production studio to sitting at the wheel and making pottery. It creates a threshold between the ordinary and elevated.

Designing a vessel to enhance that ritual was a pleasure. The Palo Santo Burning Bowl will hold the palo santo safely aloft to allow for smudging without the danger of fire from a glowing ember falling onto something unexpected.

Each handmade ceramic palo santo kit includes three sticks of ethically sourced palo santo, a small bag of pure silica sand for the center of the bowl for extinguishing your palo santo and helping to hold it in place more securely and one of my favorite palo santo cleansing rituals courtesy of Deb Swingholm at Flowering Moon - an expert in ancient Goddess symbolism, space clearing master and educator.

......................................

Now, if you’re as curious as I was about the ethics of palo santo...

There is so much information floating around about Palo Santo, some of which is accurate and much that is not at all based in truth. In an intentional effort to respect the holy aspect of palo santo and to continue our passion for sourcing materials with integrity the Palo Santo sticks we offer are ONLY sourced from a well-reputed individual source that submits to certification and auditing to confirm proper licensing for harvest, approved harvesting methods, respect for the holy wood, and partnerships with native communities to encourage growth and success for all involved. From our supplier, “For us, the value of environmentally conscious forestry practices & the humane treatment of our native community partners far outweigh the value of the dollar.” If you’d like to learn more you can find more information direct from our source here.

The Gavrinis inspired hand carved ritual bowl is going to add a special meaning to your personal rituals. The bowl measures approximately 4” diameter and is handmade using a dark stoneware clay from Kentucky Mudworks, a woman owned and operated clay manufaturer that we just happen to love.

Use your new ritual bowl with palo santo, sage, sweetgrass, resin, incense or any of your favorite clearing ingredients. Each bowl comes with a small amount of pure silica sand for the bottom so the bowl does not get too hot to hold and to extinguish your burning whatever.

One of my favorite sage bundles is from Flowering Moon. If you purchase the set of 3 sage bundles from her she will include the directions for her smudging ritual which is my absolute favorite. It is simple to follow and deeply powerful when performed correctly. It’s more than just burning sage and waving it about. She’ll walk you through every step of the process and you will be able to claim your space while clearing the energy with success every time. Click here to purchase sage bundles from Flowering Moon. If you prefer white sage, you can purchase our ethically sourced White Sage from Juniper Ridge here.

Now for the exciting stuff! This is how the bowl came into being...

When my good friend, Deb Swingholm of Flowering Moon came home from her last trip to France she was alight with stories about visiting Gavrinis.

If you google Gavrinis you’ll find a load of misinformation about it being a tomb with “abstract carvings” dating back to approximately 3500 bc. It turns out, it isn’t a tomb at all but a ritual space and those abstract carvings are actually murals of waves, suns, chevrons, trees, lozenges, coils, spirals and concentric arcs. Those arcs, not abstract at all, are described as “vulvas” and combined with the waves, the carvings “seem to say that the generative force of the Goddess is inexhaustible, rising and flowing like waves,” according to UCLA archaeology professor Marija Gimbutas. Googling “Gavrinis goddess” will get you much more interesting and accurate information.

Reclaiming power as women, the permission to set our own physical boundaries and appreciating the amazing things women do within our civilization has been a motivating force for me this past decade. Not to say I’ve ever been much of a shrinking flower, but knowing that women were once revered as the leaders of their culture and they kept the spiritual wellbeing of their tribes as sacred is heartening. Being surrounded by strong, intelligent women who bring change to their lives and the lives of those around them is inspiring. Finding male friends who support the strengths and power of the women in their lives has given me hope for a future where women do not have to struggle to be valid.

In developing new designs for pottery I have always worked to design objects that function well as intended and to decorate them in a way that means something to me.

Sometimes those carvings say, “f%#* salad, I want cake,” because...hello...cake! Sometimes they are deeply personal carvings inspired by the travels of the women in my circle, meant to empower more women to embrace their inner strength and become the badass they were always meant to be.

Find a quiet space. Take a deep breath.

Get grounded. Be connected.

Carry your altar with you.

We've created an earthing kit for the modern nomad.

Your Earthing Kit contains the following elements:

  • A cotton bag to contain all the elements with enough room to add personal items if you so desire
  • A tin to hold everything safely inside the bag
  • A handmade altar cloth by Rebecca of Gravesco Pottery woven with the intent of creating a sacred space you can take anywhere
  • Three cards with information about how to use your earthing kit and some information on the crystals themselves. Deb has crafted a simple ritual you can use anywhere for grounding and healing.
  • 1 selenite wand
  • 1 quartz crystal
  • 1 black tourmaline
  • 1 amethyst
  • 1 citrine
  • a small packet of pink salt infused with organic rosemary and lavender
  • a private link to learn even more about working with each element of your earthing kit

Deb Swingholm of Flowering Moon and Rebecca Graves Prowse of Gravesco Pottery have spent the better part of two years exploring what would make an ideal ritual kit that can easily travel anywhere yet be personal, adaptable and work effortlessly for a variety of uses.

When you receive your earthing kit you will find a QR code in the bottom. Simply scan that with the notes app or camera app using your phone to open a portal to even more knowledge about incorporating ritual into your daily practice, how to work with each element of the kit and a series of opportunities to explore the Divine Feminine and your own energies more deeply.

Rebecca says, "It is my desire to create a portable altar and all the tools needed for rituals wherever you are, regardless of your skill level or familiarity. I wanted to create something that a beginner can use and learn from to gain confidence in making ritual an enhancement in their daily lives. I also desire that experienced practitioners enjoy the ease of having an altar at their fingertips whenever and wherever they are, to be able to call upon the energy of the crystals, create a sacred space or perform a ceremony in any moment."

Deb says, "The most important thing you need in order to craft your own personal ritual is a clear intention or prayer.  What are you trying to accomplish?  Once you know that, think about how you can represent that desire and give it wings.  What actions, colors, symbols, tools or prayers can help make that real?"

It is our collaborative desire that you benefit from the knowledge and ease of the portable earthing kit.

Due to the handmade nature of each kit, we are currently accepting pre-orders for the first set to be released on Saturday, March 20th - the spring equinox.

Ethically sourced with proper intention, our palo santo sticks will bring a sacred element to your smudging, blessing or clearing practice.

It was of the utmost importance to find palo santo that is ethically sourced with independent certification in collaboration with the indigenous tribes of the area. This is not an endangered variety of palo santo, but it is properly harvested to encourage the longevity of this sacred wood.

Each bundle includes 3 generous sticks in a cotton muslin bag.

First and foremost I would like to address my belief that white sage is a sacred tool and must be used with respect in ritual.

Our mini white sage bundles are ethically sourced from Juniper Ridge. I chose Juniper Ridge because they are as dedicated to respect and ethical sourcing as Gravesco is.

We recommend the Gavrinis Ritual Bowl which you can purchase by clicking here.

From Juniper Ridge:

The Story

The mini version of our White Sage Bundle, an aromatic product made from the leaves of the West’s most iconic plant. The closest thing to walking through the Mojave Desert, for our white sage bundles, we use ethically and sustainably sourced white sage, roll the leaves into a bundle and tie them with organic hemp twine. To use, light the bundle and let the smoldering end waft its spicy, resinous aroma throughout your space. When you can’t get out there, bring nature home.

Directions: Simply light the end of the bundle and allow it to smolder. Let the smoke fill whatever space you wish and have a bowl of sand nearby to extinguish the smoldering part of the bundle. Relight as desired.
Region: Desert
Scent Notes

Juniper Ridge Style: Soft chaparral, dry sunny earth, spicy resin

Ingredients

Sustainably harvested dried white sage (Salvia apiana), organic hemp twine.

Juniper Ridge Commitment:

10% of sales of our white sage and sweetgrass products are donated to Indigenous & First Nations groups. We began this initiative in 2019 and have committed to maintain it in perpetuity.

Always burn in a well-ventilated area and ensure ash and embers are caught safely. Never leave a lit bundle unattended. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Consult a health care practitioner if you are pregnant or suffer from asthma or other respiratory issues.

Venus of Willendorf was discovered in 1908 near Willendorf, Austria. She has been dated as having been carved 22,000-25,000 years ago during the upper Paleolithic period. This robust beauty is one of the oldest and most famous works of art in the world. While we may not all have the opportunity to travel to the Natural History Museum in Vienna, we can still enjoy her essence at home with the six inch tall pure beeswax statue. Whether you imagine her as a fertility statue or a Mother Goddess, I hope you enjoy the addition of Venus of Willendorf to your ritual practice.

6" tall

30 hour burn time

Venus of Willendorf is handmade in New York in a certified living wage facility powered by the sun. In addition to focusing on the work/life balance of their employees, they give back to four humanitarian organizations. As always, we try to bring you products that are thoughtfully sourced with the importance of embracing other small businesses that embrace joy and share their successes.
