It's true. I'm a mold breaker. When someone tells me what I "should do" my immediate instinct is to pivot into the opposite direction. I'm comfortable with people not understanding or approving of my creative choices, hair cut, clothing or lifestyle. It's totally ok because their discomfort with me is about them, not about me.
My whole life I've heard I laugh too loud, not to ask so many questions, just go with it, just do what you're told, tone it down, you don't want to offend anyone, you have to keep in mind that people like (fill in the blank), and a host of other nonsense that is about their comfort level, not mine.
For a while, as an artist and maker, I would come up with an idea and second guess myself. "Is it too much? Is it too modern? Is it too bold?" No more. When I started making exactly what I want, started crafting a product line that is cohesive but shows off my mutli-faceted personality, and started truly following my passion I also started to notice that other people who like what I do were walking along with me.
Some people say, "Find your tribe." I say, be exactly who you are and your tribe will find you.
