When I was asked to participate in the Whitestone Viking Fest I immediately went on a binge researching traditional Viking pottery. This mug was one of my absolute favorite historical shapes found in Viking Village ruins.
One of the most fascinating things to me about pottery is what it can tell us about past civilizations. Pottery reaches through the ages. Cracked shards found at archeaological sites can be pieced together to tell us about the types of craftsmanship, how food was stored, how people dined.
This Viking drinking beaker design is inspired by a vessel found in Sweden from the the Viking era. I’ve put my own modern elements into it as an up to date interpretation such as food safe glaze and using an electric kiln rather than pit firing.
