 She’s been here longer than any of them. Longer than the cities built at her feet. Longer than the men who named her and the governments that drew lines around her. She was fire before she was a metaphor.
You’re going up.

The climb is not cute. Your thighs are screaming. Your hair is doing whatever it wants. The trail is loose volcanic rock and the kind of dirt that gets into everything and doesn’t wash out for days. Good. You were too clean anyway.

Halfway up, the citrus hits. Lemon peel and orange zest sharp as the sun cutting through the cloud line. Then the sweetness rolls in. Grapefruit. Mandarin. Tangerine. Agave nectar pooling in the hollows of tropical fruit so ripe it’s almost dangerous. Peach and lime and sugar at the base like the promise of the cocktail you’re going to drink when you come back down. If you come back down.

The view from up here makes everything below look optional.
